Melee player caught cheating using game hacks! – My response

hello my name is dan salvato and today we have something incredible to talk about at a recent melee tournament there was a player who cheated by modifying game files on his setup in order to buff his own character he took advantage of this to win money at the tournament I'm not kidding this is something that actually happened and the melee community is going crazy right now I've been expecting for a long time that this would eventually happen it's the ultimate can of worms that gives melee mods the worst possible reputation among both players nto s players may refuse to play on modded setups and Tio's may refuse to allow them in tournaments so we should just ban melee mods and stick to vanilla melee from now on that's the best solution right maybe but here's the problem with that as long as players are bringing their own setups it's impossible for anyone to tell if the setup is actually moderate or not the number of ways to mod melee is so large that Tio's really can't check for them all in a convenient manner for the heck of it I'll tell you every possible way of bringing a modded melee to a tournament number one modify the game disk ahead of time and bloat it as an ISO from a USB loader number two modify the game disc ahead of time burn into a backup disk and loaded on the console number three use an unmodified ISO and load it from a USB loader and enable cheat codes number four use an unmodified physical game disk and load it from gecko OS which injects cheat codes into the game number five use an unmodified physical game disc and load on a Gamecube that has been modded to inject cheat codes into the game number six use an unmodified physical game disk and use action replay to inject cheat codes into the game number seven use an unmodified physical game disk and use melees memory card exploit to inject cheat codes into the game so that means the only way to actually ban mods is to forbid players from bringing their own setups this might be possible some majors but that's about it almost every melee tournament in the world is dependent on players bringing their own setups this is one reason why I've put emphasis on having reputable trusted mods that could be used in tournaments if you can't avoid mods then the least you could do is make sure a trusted mod is being loaded onto tournament setups so I just want to emphasize that this incident may never happen again even though modding has become really accessible it's still pretty hard to acquire the technical know-how to do this and avoid detection in my opinion the scariest possibility is actually for a melee hacker to start selling mods to players this is in plenty of other competitive games even the big ones like csgo so if we want to take countermeasures against this what are the options here well right now there really aren't many options tos can load a trusted mod such as xx xx to e on to all tournament setups which at least prevents the memory card exploit from being used on those setups but that doesn't really cover all of the other possibilities so what I'm going to start looking into is writing an integrity check for game files that trusted mods can use in other words we can store a table of file info for all of the character files and every time a file gets loaded from the disk we check it against the table to make sure it's valid we can do the same thing for the 20xx te code set or any other trusted code set that means that both the character files and the code set would be resistant to tampering right now that's looking like the most appealing option and I'm going to start looking into possible implementations so if what I described was implemented into trusted mods then TOS could just load the trusted mod onto all of the setups in the venue if there are any other mods on the setup that could be used for cheating then the trusted mod would pick up on it and prevent that setup from being used in the end it's impossible to patch every security hole right now the melee hacking scene is limited enough in scope that we should be able to cover most known methods of cheating but anyway I'm trying to look into this next week so hopefully I'll have an update on it soon thanks for listening
